Expenditures for health care in the United States continue to rise and are estimated to reach $1.66 trillion in 2003. Much of these costs can be attributed to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and asthma. A much smaller amount is spent on preventing these conditions.
Behavioral Health
ASPE publishes research to inform policymaking on behavioral health across sectors, including healthcare financing and delivery, public health, and human services. ASPE’s work focuses on supporting evidence-based prevention efforts, increasing access to high-quality treatment, and promoting long-term recovery from mental and substance use disorders.
