Older adults with behavioral health disorders often experience worse health and functional outcomes, have higher rates of emergency department visits, use more medications, and have higher health care costs than those without a behavioral health disorder. There is need for a greater understanding of the extent to which older adults experience behavioral health disorders. Updated evidence is also needed on services being used by older adults with behavioral health disorders and associated spending. The goal of this chartbook was to address these needs.

This research was conducted under contract #HHSP233201500039I between HHS/ASPE’s Office of Behavioral Health, Disability, and Aging Policy (BHDAP) and Research Triangle Institute.  Additional research in this area is available at the ASPE Aging & Disability page and Behavioral Health page.
