The first brief below provides insight into children’s and adolescents’ mental health service use in Medicaid and CHIP during the pandemic, by using a national Medicaid claims database. Specifically, this study examines mental health and substance use disorder service use during the pandemic among Medicaid-covered children compared with use before the pandemic by service type, diagnosis, and use of psychotropic and medication.
The second brief contains an analysis of a national Medicaid/CHIP claims data to examine encounters related to suicidal ideation and suicide attempt/self-harm during 2019 and 2020, and it adds to the knowledge base on this topic by including younger children and examining rates across groups with different co-occurring behavioral health conditions.
This research was conducted under contract #HHSP2233201500035I between HHS/ASPE’s Office of Behavioral Health, Disability, and Aging Policy (BHDAP) and Mathematica Policy Research. Additional research in this area is available at the ASPE COVID-19 page, the Behavioral Health page, or the Public Health page.
