ASPE recently published a narrative review in PLOS Digital Health exploring how synthetic data are being used. Researchers searched published literature and known, publicly available synthetic datasets. The review identified seven use cases of synthetic data in health care: 1) simulation and prediction research, 2) hypothesis, methods, and algorithm testing, 3) epidemiology/public health research, 4) health IT development, 5) education and training, 6) public release of datasets, and 7) linking data. By explaining the utility and value of synthetic data, this publication aims to improve understanding of synthetic data for different applications in research and software development.
