This brief presents considerations for program administrators and other practitioners around increasing the use of primary prevention in human services systems to shift from responding to families after they are in crisis to preventing the crisis before it occurs. This will require developing a national framework for delivering prevention services that promotes equity by co-creating services with the individuals and communities served. A critical part of this framework will be creating a workforce for delivering prevention services that includes people with lived experience.
Key Points:
- Develop a national framework for delivering prevention services.
- Build a primary prevention workforce with a person-first approach to service delivery.
- Continuously improve service accessibility and effectiveness by engaging those with lived experience.
- Engage communities to support prevention.
This brief is one in a series of three short issue briefs that highlight key reflections from a Health and Human Services (HHS) virtual convening in August 2022. Each brief is centered on a specific audience based on the role they play in a human services system focused on primary prevention.
