The purpose of this paper is to examine the health and disability status of AFDC families using information gathered in the 1984 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) and to assess the implications for welfare work programs. No such analysis had been performed before, because SIPP was the first survey to collect extensive data on income, participation in AFDC and health and disability. The prevalence of functional disability among women on AFDC was found to be high (22%) compared to only 9% among women not on AFDC. [17 PDF pages]
