This project continues the analysis of Medicare beneficiary level episodes of post-acute care. RTI builds on its previously funded ASPE project by expanding the episode file to include 2006 claims.

This literature review explores the relevant literature on several key questions regarding boarding of psychiatric patients in the emergency department (ED). Is psychiatric boarding a problem? What are the reasons for boarding psychiatric patients? What kind of care is received while patients are boarded?

The Examining Relationships in an Integrated Hospital System research project with RTI explores whether an organizational link between a Medicare hospital and a Medicare post-acute care (PAC) setting, such as a long term care hospital, inpatient rehabilitation facility, skilled nursing facility, or home health agency, increases the likelihood of transfer to a Medicare PAC setting.

To date, there has been little research on how states use Medicaid to pay for services for elderly persons in residential care settings. This report is intended to fill that gap, by describing in depth how six states use their Medicaid programs to fund residential care services for elderly persons. These states are Florida, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, and Wisconsin.
