Air ambulances are used to transport patients in critical situations from the scene of an injury or accident to hospitals, or between hospitals. This report reviews several issues, including evidence on the number of air ambulance providers and suppliers, utilization rates by patients, and average costs, as well as the potential for balance billing for air ambulance transport, particularly for privately insured and uninsured patients. The No Surprises Act addresses, among other things, surprise air ambulance bills and requires reporting by air ambulance companies and health plans to fill data gaps in this area.
